How does Reiki work?

Reiki energy is universal.  It is within, and moving through, all of us.  Although the more current Reiki healing story started with Mikao Usui in the late 1800s in Japan and then was brought to the United States by Hawayo Takata in 1937, the use of healing touch has been shared in stories throughout history and in many cultures.  Similarly, the universal energy is revered and integrated into awareness in many cultures: in China, it is referred to as Ch’I, In India as Prana, and in Japan as Ki.

Anything with life has this energy moving through it.  Minerals, plants, and animals all rely on their Ki energy to create warmth, digest their food, and remain healthy and vital.  This energy nourishes the organs and cells of the human body, supporting them in their vital functions. When this flow of energy is impeded, it may cause diminished function in one or more of the physical body’s organs and tissues.

Reiki healing practices help to restore and balance the energy in the body, allowing us to better heal ourselves.  Through attunements, the Reiki practitioner is connected deeply to this universal energy, which is used for self-healing and for supporting others’ energy healing experiences.  The practitioner simply facilitates the flow of energy and allows it to go where it is needed, without impeding or directing. Reiki healing supports the restoration of harmony and balance to the body and energy centers.

Reasons to explore Reiki Healing support

Some reasons one might seek out Reiki Healing sessions include:  relaxation, promoting self healing, promoting optimal health, stress relief, headaches, emotional imbalance, physical tension, dis-ease, menstrual cramps, sleep challenges, exploring spiritual growth, or just to try something new.

Since my foundation is to provide therapy through my Psychology background, when using Reiki healing with established therapy clients, I only utilize distance healing; no touch is required to facilitate this healing, and as such, this boundary is maintained in this relationship.

For clients who are seeking Reiki Healing support only (without therapy), this work is often provided through distance Reiki via zoom or, in person, you would sit in a chair or lay on a massage table fully clothed while the practitioner lays their hands above your body.

At this time, all Reiki Energy Healing is through distance healing via the remote platform.  Since Reiki energy exists in all living things, distance healing requires the practitioner to move energy through space and time to the client, to which I utilize the tools I learned through my Level II Reiki Healing training to boundary this space and provide a safe, therapeutic distance healing experience for the client.

What to expect & How to prepare

Before attending a Reiki Healing session, it is helpful for you to drink a glass of water for hydration, eat a light meal within a couple of hours of the session so as not to be hungry or overly full during the experience, and prepare your space. Since the recipient of Reiki healing is an active participant during their session, setting an intention to being open to receive whatever they might need most from the session prior to the appointment is recommended.  This intention could be a sought experience, opening up of or easing parts of the body or mind, or any other current thoughts, wishes, and desires felt by the client.

To prepare your space, you will need to set your computer up so it can standalone while you relax during the session, prepare either a comfortable chair, couch, or bed space based on your preference of lying down or sitting up for the healing session, and have a journal nearby if you’d like to write and reflect after the session has completed.

During the Reiki Healing session, you can expect to relax into a deeper state of calm, I will transition you into the Reiki with some guided grounding to help your mind and body begin to settle, and while you close your eyes, you will hear sound and/ or music throughout the Reiki session.  People report experiencing light vibrations or temperature changes around different areas of their body. While others report having a felt sense of energy concentrated in different areas or experiencing colors and other visuals in their minds eye.

After the session, it could be helpful for you to continue to process your experience by journaling any felt sensations, emotions, or experiences.  It is preferable to limit or avoid alcohol or high sugar foods so as to let your body settle and continue to benefit from the Reiki Healing energy moving through your system. Hydrating post-session and getting a well-rounded night’s sleep will also be helpful for your system to continue to gain the benefits.
